Research Notes on Swine Flu
Swine flu (more currently known as Novel H1N1) is a respiratory disease that affects pigs and is caused by influenza type A. Swine flu can be transmitted to humans by direct contact with pigs, or direct contact with someone already infected with the disease. Swine flu symptoms include fever, coughing, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, appetite loss, and runny nose.1
Fast Facts:
- Swine flu can not be transmitted through food or consumption of pork products.1
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the use of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza) to help treat the swine flu.1
- A vaccine has been recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and will be offered throughout the United States.1
- The H1N1 virus that causes swine flu is a derivative of the H1N1 virus that caused the 1918 flu pandemic.2
