Research Notes on Supplements for Heart Health
Studies in the past have led us to believe that taking supplements can help to reduce the risk of heart disease. However, the American Heart Association does not recommend taking supplements for heart health. Instead they advise that people consume the dietary recommended intakes of nutrients through the foods they eat.1
Fast Facts:
- Research has not proven that antioxidant vitamins reduce blood pressure or lower cholesterol.1
- Only people who have been diagnosed with heart disease and advised by a physician should take omega-3 supplements.1
- Beta-carotene supplements have been shown to not reduce heart disease, but instead raise the risk of lung cancer.2
