Research Notes on Sulfazine and Pregnancy
Sulfazine is not expected to be harmful to a fetus when used during pregnancy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Sulfazine as a category B medication. Drugs in this classification have not been well-studied during human pregnancy, but no evidence of an increased risk of birth defects was displayed when the drug was tested on animals during pregnancy.1
Fast Facts:
- Though considered generally safe, women who become pregnant or who wish to become pregnant should consult with a physician regarding the continued use of this medication.2
- Sulfazine is believed to be excreted in the milk of breastfeeding mothers, and these women may be asked to consider switching to bottle feeding while undergoing Sulfazine therapy.2
- Sulfazine is a brand name of the generic medication sulfasalazine.2
