Research Notes on Suicide Rate Up

A new report by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Injury Research and Policy reveals that the rate of suicide in the U.S. is rising for the first time in 10 years. An increase in suicides in whites between the ages of 40 and 64 is the primary reason for the rate increase, while white middle-aged women account for the largest annual increase. The rate of suicide among middle-aged white men rose to 2.7 percent yearly, while the rate among women was 3.9 percent. The rate increase in Native Americans and Asians has remained stable.1

Fast Facts:

  • The reason for the raised suicide rate is unknown, but the economic downturn is predicted to keep the rate high.2
  • In the year 2005, over 32,000 people committed suicide, which is a rate of 11 per 100,000 people.2
  • The study also revealed that guns are the most common method of committing suicide, but both suffocation and hanging are becoming common.2
