Research Notes on Suicide Prevention
If you or someone you know is considering suicide, call 1-800-SUICIDE.1 People who are considering suicide are often noticeably depressed, and 75% express their wishes to die to a friend or family member. It is important to take any threat of suicide seriously.2
Fast Facts:
- Give encouragement for the person to seek treatment.2
- It may be necessary to take the person to the emergency room or a psychiatric hospital.2
- Some suicide risk factors include depression, alcoholism or substance abuse, a history of physical or sexual abuse, or a medical condition such as cancer.3
