Research Notes on Stroke Volume
Stroke volume is the volume of blood pumped from one ventricle of the heart with each heart beat. Stroke volume is combined with heart rate to determine cardiac output.1 In a standing position, at rest, stroke volume averages 60 to 80 mL of blood in adults.2 Stroke volume is increased by end-diastolic volume and sympathetic system activity.3
Fast Facts:
- Approximately two-thirds of the blood is pumped out of the ventricle with each beat.4
- Stroke volume is calculated by subtracting the volume of blood in the ventricle at the end of a heart beat from volume of blood just prior to heart beat.1
- The average adult's body contains approximately 5 L of blood. Blood is pumped through the heart once every minute.5
