Research Notes on Stroke Types
A stroke occurs when the blood flow into the brain is interrupted, causing rapid loss of brain function. Strokes can be classified into two main categories: the ischemic and the hemorrhagic strokes.1 Ischemic strokes are typically caused by blood clot formation and hypotension that impede the normal blood flow to the brain. On the other hand, hemorrhagic strokes result from bleeding in the brain, due to poorly controlled hypertension or aneurysm.2
