Research Notes on Stress and High Blood Pressure
While blood pressure temporarily increases in response to stressors, it also is restored to a normal level once the stressor is removed.1 Researchers are currently unsure if repeated spikes in blood pressure over time have a direct impact on future chronic high blood pressure.1 It is known, however, that repeated spikes of blood pressure related to stress can play a role in the future development of coronary heart disease.1
Fast Facts:
- Unhealthy stress coping mechanisms may contribute to hypertension.2
- Not getting enough sleep can contribute to stress and high blood pressure.3
- Although stress management techniques may not prevent high blood pressure, it can provide other health benefits.4
