Streptozotocin is a chemical that occurs naturally and is used to treat spreading cancer of the pancreatic islet cells. It is not very successful in curing the cancer. Therefore it is primarily used on people whose cancer cannot be removed by surgery.1 One side effect of streptozotocin is that it is destructive to insulin producing cells.2 Streptozotocin injected into mice has been shown to destroy the beta cells in the pancreas and thus inducing pancreatic insulitis which leads to diabetes mellitus.3
Fast Facts:
- Used in animals to cause type 1 diabetes for research purposes.1
- Is toxic to the beta cells thus causing damage to the DNA.1
