Strep throat is an infection caused by bacteria. It is called "strep" because the bacteria that causes the infection is called streptococcus. Strep throat is a common infection in children and teens. Treatment is usually necessary; requiring an antibiotic. Symptoms with strep throat are usually a sore throat, red and swollen tonsils, fever, and sometimes stomach pain.
