Research Notes on Peptic Ulcer

A peptic ulcer (gastric ulcer, stomach ulcer, ulcer, duodenal ulcer) is a sore in the lining of your upper small intestine (duodenum) or your stomach. If not treated, peptic ulcers may worsen over time. Pain from the ulcer may come and go and often alleviates after you eat.1

Fast Facts

  • Peptic ulcers are caused by the breakdown of the stomach, or intestine's, protective layer.2
  • This breakdown most commonly occurs from an infection with helicobacter pylori bacteria or the chronic use of NSAIDs.2
  • Quitting smoking and limiting the use of alcohol may prevent an ulcer from returning.3
  • Medications are commonly prescribed to treat ulcers. Your doctor may also prescribe an antibiotic if your ulcer is caused by an H. pylori infection.3
