Research Notes on Stomach Cramps

The term "stomach cramps" is not entirely clear. The most correct interpretation is that the stomach muscle undergoes painful spasms. However, many people use the term loosely to mean any kind of stomach discomfort, stomach ache, abdominal discomfort or abdominal pain.1 For most people, stomach cramps are only minor discomforts so they just wait for it to pass. Although a fairly common occurrence, it is very important to give proper attention to stomach cramps because there are a lot of things that can cause it. Causes can include anxiety, constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating, and even PMS.2

Fast Facts:

  • Rumbling and gurgling noises, belching, passing gas, nausea, or vomiting may be experienced3
  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and narcotic pain medications unless it is prescribed by a health care provider.4
  • It is very important to seek medical attention when the pain escalates or interferes with daily living.5
