Research Notes on Stinging Nettle Plant


The stinging nettle bush is covered with tiny stinging hairs which contain two chemicals called histamine and formic acid. The plant releases these irritating chemicals when coming in contact with the skin. The spines on the stinging nettle plant are painful when touched; however if the body is already in pain, they can actually be used to decrease pain. This is known as a counter-irritant. The stinging nettle can be used to relieve pain from insect bites or stings. It is also used for urinary tract infections, kidney stones, allergic rhinitis, treating joint pain, and as a treatment for urinary problems during the early stages of an enlarged prostate. Recent studies are showing that stinging nettles might also help with rheumatoid arthritis.
