Research Notes on Statin Neuropathy

Studies have shown that statin medications may pose an increased risk of peripheral neuropathy.1 The studies showed a 4.6-fold increase in risk for people who took statins for developing all types of peripheral neuropathy.2 The risk increased as the length of statin use increased with the study participants taking statins for an average of 2.8 years.1 The overall risk of developing statin-caused peripheral neuropathy is very small relating to one case per 2200 person years of statin use.2

Fast Facts:

  • One study showed the average duration of statin-linked neuropathy to be from one dose to 4.5 years.3
  • Statins were reported to be the only medication responsible for the neuropathy in 54% of the cases in one study.3
  • Symptoms of neuropathy are usually loss of function, pain, numbness, tingling, and loss of sensation.4
  • It is currently unknown if there is an increased risk for all statin drugs.5
  • The current studies have not looked into underlying risk factors, such as diabetes, and increased severity or risk for neuropathy in their studies.5
