Research Notes on Statin Alternatives
There are multiple alternatives to statins for lowering cholesterol including cholesterol absorption inhibitors, niacin, fibrates, bile acid sequestrants, and other natural based therapies.1 Natural alternatives include red yeast rice and some fish oils.2 Many statin alternatives are used in conjunction with statin medications due to their complementary effects.3 A healthy diet and plenty of exercise may be the best prevention from having to use statins.
Fast Facts:
- Common medications include Zetia (ezetimibe), a cholesterol absorption inhibitor; Locholest (cholestyramine) and Prevalite (cholestyramine), bile acid sequestrants; Lopid (gemfibrozil) and Tricor (fenofibrate), fibrates.1
- Red yeast rice works in a similar way as a statin medication, but is able to reduce cholesterol without as many side effects.4
- Other supplements which may be helpful in supporting the body while taking statin medications include coenzyme Q-10 and aspirin.
