Research Notes on Staph Infection
Staph is short for Staphylococcus, a type of bacteria. Staph infections are very common and are usually controlled with antibiotics. Staph bacteria can cause illness not only directly by infection (such as in the skin), but also indirectly by producing toxins responsible for food poisoning and toxic shock syndrome.

- Certain groups of people are at greater risk of staph infection: newborn infants, breastfeeding women, people with chronic condtions such as diabetes, cancer, vascular disease, and lung disease.
- Staph infections of the skin can progress to impetigo or cellulitis.
- In breastfeeding women, staph infection can result in mastitis.
- When the staph infection enters the bloodstream it can spread to other organs, which may cause staphylococcal pneumonia or endocarditis which can lead to heart failure.
- Staphylococci of the bone causes osteomyelitis.
