Research Notes on Stages of Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer has five stages that are determined by several factors.1 The stage of prostate cancer is determined by the size of the tumor, if the cancer has spread, and where the cancer has spread.2 A biopsy, digital rectal exam (DRE), and transrectal ultrasound are used to measure the stage of the prostate cancer.2
Fast Facts:
- In stage I prostate cancer, the cancer cannot be felt during a DRE.1
- In stage II prostate cancer, the cancer is more advanced than stage I, but has not spread outside of the prostate.1
- In stage III prostate cancer, the cancer has spread outside of the prostate, but not to the lymph nodes.2
- In stage IV prostate cancer, the cancer may have spread to other parts of the body.2
- Over 220,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.2
