Research Notes on Sprains
A sprain is an injury to a ligament (a thick, tough, fibrous tissue that connects bones together). Common sprains occur to the ankle, elbow, wrist, and knee. The symptoms of a sprain are typically pain, swelling, and bruising of the affected joint.
Fast Facts:
- Initial treatment usually involves resting the injured area, icing it, wearing a bandage or device that compresses the area, and medicines.
- More than 4 of 10 injuries resulting in time absent from work are due to sprains and strains.
- An immobilized sprain usually heals in 2 to 3 weeks.
