Research Notes on Sodium Valproate
Sodium valproate is an anticonvulsant medication. It is used to treat seizures, bipolar disorder, and to prevent migraine headaches. Sodium valproate should not be used during pregnancy as it may cause birth defects. Sodium valproate will add to the effects of alcohol. If you are diabetic this medication may affect your urine ketones giving a false positive.1
Fast Facts:
- It should be taken at the same time everyday to keep consistent levels of the medication in your system.2
- Common side effects may include weight gain, diarrhea, drowsiness, and stomach cramps.3
- Sold in the United States under the names Depacon and Depakene.4
