Research Notes on Sleeping Pills
Sleeping pills, also referred to as sedative-hypnotics, are medications used to help people fall asleep and/or stay asleep. Sleeping pills do not treat the underlying causes of sleeplessness. While recent prescription sleep medications do not carry the risk of dependence and overdose that were present with those of the past, risks still remain.
Fast Facts:
- Side effects may include dizziness, facial swelling and headache
- Lunesta, Rozerem, Halcion, Sonata, and Ambien are common brands
- Never mix alcohol and sleeping pills
- Use is associated with increased risk of nighttime falls and injuries in older adults
- It is important to address the cause of sleeplessness
