Sleep paralysis is a temporary loss of muscle function of almost the entire body upon waking up or shortly before falling asleep. It can last from a few seconds to several minutes and is experienced by around 50% of individuals who have narcolepsy. In the absence of narcolepsy, sleep paralysis is termed isolated sleep paralysis, which is more common and recurrent among African Americans.
