Research Notes on Sleep Hygiene
Sleep hygiene refers to the habits and practices which lead to a good night's sleep that allows you to be refreshed and alert throughout the following day.1 Maintaining a regular sleep and wake pattern is critical for proper sleep hygiene.2 While exercise can promote healthy sleep patterns, vigorous exercises should be performed early in the day, while relaxing exercise such as yoga can be performed closer to bedtime.2 Obtaining and maintaining proper sleep hygiene can decrease the need for insomnia medications.3
Fast Facts:
- Tips for proper sleep hygiene include: avoid naps during the day, obtain adequate exposure to natural light, associate your bed with sleep, and establish a regular, relaxing bedtime routine.2
- Seven to eight hours of sleep nightly are generally adequate for most people.2
- Four important factors that can effect sleep hygiene are the body's natural circadian rhythm, aging, psychological stressors, and common drugs such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.1
