Research Notes on Skeletal System


The skeletal system consists of 206 bones that support organs, anchors muscles and protects internal organs.1 Newborns are born with approximately 270 bones with some fusing together such as the sacrum and coccyx.1 Functions of the skeletal system include support, movement, protection, blood cell production, storage and endocrine regulation.2 The skeletal system is divided into two areas - axial and appendicular.1

  • The axial is comprised of 80 bones in the head and trunk of the human body.3
  • The appendicular has 126 bones which make motion possible and protects organs such as digestion, excretion and reproduction.4
  • Skeletal system is 20% of total body weight of an adult.1
  • Longest bone is the femur - 19 inches in length and .92 inches in diameter.1
  • Smallest bone is the stapes bone located in the middle ear.1
