Research Notes on Six Minute Walk Test


The six-minute walk test is generally used at the start of a pulmonary rehabilitation program.1 It can also be used to evaluate the sucess of a lung transplant.1 Results of the test are needed to make an exercise program that will best meet the patient’s needs.1 To do this test, the patient will walk back and forth on a flat surface for the 6 minutes.1

  • The object of this test is to walk for as far as possible in the 6 minute time frame.1
  • Slowing down, stopping, and resting if needed are permitted.1
  • The patient may lean against the wall while resting, but should continue walking as soon as they are able.1
