Research Notes on Sinuses

The sinuses - also referred to as paranasal sinuses - are hollow, air-filled spaces within the facial bones.1 They are lined with mucous membrane composed of cells that produce mucus and have cilia.2 Sinuses are divided into four regions - maxillary sinuses, frontal sinuses, ethmoid sinuses and sphenoid sinuses.1

  • Sinuses reduce the weight of facial bones and skull.2
  • Not fully developed until after the age twelve.3
  • Maxillary and frontal sinuses are associated with sinus infections.3
  • Blockage of normal drainage in the sinuses lead to sinusitis.2
