Research Notes on Single-Ventricle Defects
Single-ventricle defects are rare, complex congenital heart defects that affect one of the heart's chambers. This condition may cause an individual to become cyanotic, fatigued, and increase the risk of infections. Patients diagnosed with single-ventricle defects generally require multiple surgeries to improve rhythm problems, fluid retention, heart muscle failure, and blood clots.1
Fast Facts:
- Tricuspid valve atresia, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, hypoplastic right heart syndrome, mitral valve atresia, and double-inlet ventricle are types of single-ventricle defects.1
- Single-ventricle defects occur during fetal development in the first trimester of pregnancy when the tube (heart) does not split into separate ventricles.2
- Fontan operation, Blalock-Taussig (B-T) shunt, and Glenn shunts are surgical procedures for single-ventricle defects.1
