Research Notes on Simvastatin Dosage
As with all medications, your physician will consider many things prior to prescribing simvastatin, including your overall medical history. The typical starting dosage of simvastatin for the treatment of high cholesterol in adults is 20 mg to 40 mg, administered daily. This dosage may be adjusted up or down as needed, with the average daily dosage being between 5 mg and 80 mg. When treating children, the recommended starting dosage of simvastatin is 10 mg once a day, not to exceed 40 mg daily. Patients over the age of 65, who suffer from kidney disease, or who take cyclosporine may be prescribed a lower initial dosage of simvastatin.1

- Simvastatin is typically taken in the evening at bedtime, or with your last meal of the day. Should you take this medication more than once daily, be certain to take it with your meals.2
- In order to gain the most benefit from your therapy, it is important to take simvastatin exactly as directed, at the same time each day.3
- As with all medications, keep out of reach of children.
