Research Notes on Signs of a Suicidal Person


Signs of a suicidal person should be taken seriously. Some of the suicidal signs include preoccupation with death, withdrawal from family and friends, loss of interest in normal activities, sudden personality changes, and feeling hopeless.1 Signs of a suicidal person may also include changes in eating and sleeping habits, risky or self-destructive behavior, giving away personal belongings, and depression.2

Fast Facts:

  • Warning signs are seen in up to 75% of all suicide victims.3
  • Serious depression followed by sudden calmness may be a sign that someone has made a decision commit suicide.2
  • If you or someone that you know is feeling suicidal seek help from a doctor or hospital. Help can also be sought by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).3
