Research Notes on Signs of Preeclampsia

High blood pressure and a high level of protein in the urine during pregnancy are typical signs of preeclampsia. These signs are often accompanied by swelling in the feet, legs, and hands. Additional signs may include rapid weight gain due to a significant increase in bodily fluid, abdominal pain, severe headaches, change in reflexes, reduced or lack of urine, dizziness, and excessive vomiting and nausea.1

Fast Facts:

  • Preeclampsia often occurs suddenly after the twentieth week of pregnancy, but in some cases it may develop gradually.2
  • Severity of symptoms may vary from person to person.2
  • Although swelling, headaches, and nausea may occur in any pregnancy, you should contact your doctor if you are concerned about any symptoms.2
