Research Notes on Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder that mostly affects people of African ancestry, but also occurs in other ethnic groups, including people who are of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent. Sickle cell anemia is a disease in which your body produces abnormally shaped red blood cells. The cells are shaped like crescent or sickle. They do not last as long as normal red blood cells, which leads to anemia. The sickle cells get stuck into blood vessels, blocking the blood flow. This can cause pain and also organ damage.
