Research Notes on Shingles Prevention
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends getting the zoster vaccine (Zostavax) to prevent shingles among elderly patients aged 60 and above. It is administered as a single 0.65 mL dose in the upper arm. This vaccine will likely reduce the the incidence of shingles as well as the risk of postherpetic neuralgia. Like any other vaccines, certain precautions such as proper dosage, age, number of shots and the like, should be followed in order to minimize it's side effects.
