Research Notes on Shingles Nerve Pain
After having chicken pox, the virus becomes dormant in the spinal cord (specifically, in the dorsal root ganglia). Reactivation of the virus causes shingles, in which the virus spreads through to the nerve distribution of the skin called dermatomes. Dermatomes describe the location where pain and blisters appear on the skin. Even if the blisters are already healed, nerve pain may last for months or even years. This condition is called postherpetic neuralgia.
