Research Notes on Service Dogs

A service dog is a type of dog that is trained specifically to give assistance to disabled people. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, allows equal access for the disabled person and their service dog to gain entry to anywhere the general public is allowed to go.

Fast Facts:

  • A disabled handler may have his service dog trained by a training handler or train them themselves.
  • The ADA defines a service animal as "any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability."
  • The care or supervision of a service dog is solely the responsibility of his or her owner.
  • Some, but not all, service dogs wear special collars and harnesses so you can identify them as a service animal.
