Research Notes on Sertraline Withdrawal
Discontinuing sertraline too quickly can cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, irritability, anxiety, headache and confusion.1 Sertraline given at low doses does not normally produce adverse withdrawal symptoms.2 However, discontinuing sertraline quickly can cause what is called "discontinuation syndrome".3
Fast Facts:
- Sertraline -- commonly sold under the brand name Zoloft -- is an antidepressant belonging to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
- It is used in the treatment of clinical depression in adults, as well as social anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic.4
- Your health care provider can assist you with the best way to discontinue treatment, if needed.1
- As with many antidepressants, patients frequently have questions regarding their use. OrganizedWisdom has psychiatrists addressing the most common concerns about taking these drugs.
