Research Notes on Serpentwood
Serpentwood (also called Indian Snakeroot, snakeroot, and rauwolfia) is a plant that is grown in parts of Asia, South America, Africa, India and Thialand.1 It has been used to treat high blood pressure, to relieve fever and as a sedative.2 Although no scientific evidence proves it to be beneficial and it carries a risk of potentially serious health problems (low blood pressure, for example), it is still available as a supplement in the United States.1
Fast Facts:
- Also used for diarrhea, some mental illnesses and dysentery.3
- Should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women.3
- Stop taking immediately if chest pain, skin rash or you experience difficulty breathing.2
