Research Notes on Serotonin Syndrome

Serotonin syndrome is a drug reaction that causes the body to have too much serotonin. Serotonin syndrome is most often reported in patients taking two or more medications that increase central nervous system serotonin levels. This syndrome can be life-threatening.

  • Serotonin syndrome is more likely to occur when you first begin or increase a medicine.
  • Drugs of abuse, such as ecstasy and LSD (“acid”), have also been associated with serotonin syndrome.
  • You can also develop this syndrome if you take migraine medicines.

  • Although serotonin syndrome can cause death, the condition is mild in most persons.
  • Symptoms that may occur are restlessness, hallucinations, loss of coordination, fast heart beat, rapid changes in blood pressure, increased body temperature, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
