Research Notes on Serotonin
Serotonin plays an important role in an individual's mental health. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which sends nerve signals between areas of an individual's brain. Serotonin regulates anger, aggression, sexuality as well as appetite and moods. An imbalance of serotonin can cause depression and sudden changes in an individual's behavior and moods.1

- Maurice M. Rapport, Arda Green and Irvine Page, all of the Cleveland Clinic, discovered serotonin in 1948.2
- Adults only have about 5 to 10 mg of serotonin throughout their bodies.3
- About 90% of serotonin in adults is found in the intestines.4
- It is believed regular exercise can alter levels of serotonin.4
- Extremely high levels of serotonin can be fatal.4
- Serotonin occurs naturally in mushrooms and plants.2
