Research Notes on Seroquel
Seroquel is a brand name for the drug quetiapine, which is an antipsychotic medication.1 It is utilized to treat the symptoms associated with psychotic and mood conditions, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and works by altering the actions of chemicals within the brain.1 For complete information, see the quetiapine WisdomCard.
Fast Facts:
- Studies indicate that older adults with dementia who utilize this type of medication have an increased risk of death during treatment.2
- Not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of behavioral problems in older adults. 2
- A percentage of those aged twenty-four and younger became suicidal as a result of treatment with this and similar medications.2
- Side effects include dry mouth, headache, constipation, dizziness, sore throat and excessive weight gain.2
