Septic shock is a life-threatening medical condition caused by an infection which has entered the blood stream, initiating a cascade of inflammatory responses. People most likely to suffer from this are children, the elderly, or those who are immunocompromised. Septic shock results in decreased perfusion and oxygen delivery, which may lead to multiple organ failure. Treatment includes broad spectum antibiotics, intravenous fluids, oxygen, and vasopressor medications.
