Research Notes on Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a certain group of antidepressants used in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. The drugs are designed to allow the neurotransmitter serotonin to be utilized more effectively.
Fast Facts:
- Some SSRIs are available in extended-release form or controlled-release form, often designated with the letters XR or CR.
- Psychiatrists say that in general, about two-thirds of depressed people will respond to any given antidepressant.
- Some of these medications may also be used to treat conditions other than depression.
- Side effects of SSRIs include, nausea, sexual dysfunction, headache, diarrhea, agitation, nervousness, restlessness, increased sweating, weight gain, drowsiness and insomnia.
- SSRIs aren't considered addictive. However, stopping treatment abruptly or missing several doses can cause withdrawal-like symptoms.
