Research Notes on Sedatives
Sedatives are medications that have a calming effect on a person. Sedatives may reduce nervous system problems like anxiety or aid a person in falling asleep. They are also used to depress or slow down certain body functions, and can help with nausea, convulsions, or even reducing coughing.1
Fast Facts:
- Sedatives can cause dependence when taken over a period of time.2
- Alcohol and sedatives should not be taken together as this combination can be fatal.2
- Memory loss, short attention spans, and swift emotion changes are a few possible complications from sedatives.3
