Research Notes on Secondary Sjogren's Syndrome

Secondary Sjogren's syndrome occurs when a patient has another autoimmune condition prior to getting Sjogren's syndrome. These conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and scleroderma. Because they have two conditions, patients with secondary Sjogren's syndrome often have more health problems than those with primary Sjogren's syndrome.1

Fast Facts:

  • Sjogren's syndrome occurs when the immune system cells attack and destroy the glands that produce moisture.2
  • Sjogren's syndrome is associated with rheumatoid arthritis, and 90 percent of cases are rheumatoid factor positive.3
  • Sjogren's syndrome is a chronic disorder.4
