Research Notes on Second Degree Heart Block
Second degree heart block is a delay in the electrical impulse that travels through the heart, resulting in an incomplete heartbeat. Some signals can't reach the ventricles and if the signal is blocked before it reaches the ventricles, they won't contract and pump blood to the lungs and the rest of the body. Second-degree heart block is divided into two different types, Mobitz type I and Mobitz type II. Mobitz type II is less common than type I, but is usually more severe.1
Fast Facts:
- In Mobitz type I, the electrical signals are delayed more and more with each heartbeat, until the heart skips a beat.1
- Mobitz type II is when some electrical signals move between the atria and ventricles normally, while others are blocked.1
- Patients with type II may need an artificial pacemaker to maintain their heart rate.
- Symptoms of second degree heart block include fainting, feeling dizzy, fatigue, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
- You can be born with heart block (congenital heart block) or you can develop it (acquired heart block). Acquired heart block is more common.1
- Treatment for second degree heart block includes stopping any medication that may cause heart block.2
