A barbituate derivative, secobarbital is used to treat epilepsy, temporary insomnia, and in some cases as an anesthetic for minor surgical procedures. Side effects can include impaired motor functions, anxiety, nausea, and nightmares. Secobarbital is sold under the brand name Seconal.

  • Recreational use of secobarbital was linked to the deaths of Charles Boyer, Bartley Crum, Judy Garland, Jimi Hendrix, Anissa Jones, Marilyn Monroe and Lupe Velez.
  • Because of the highly addictive nature and severe potential side effects, secobarbital is rarely prescribed.
