Research Notes on Scurvy
Scurvy is a disease which occurs when people don't get enough Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in their diet. Today, Scurvy is rare and seen mostly in adults suffering from malnutrition. It has also been seen in infants between the ages of 6 months to 1 year. Those affected with Scurvy find that wounds and burns are slow to heal. The disease is characterized by easy bruising, gingivitis, skin hemorrhages and anemia. In the 18th Century, Scurvy was sometimes mistaken for asthma, leprosy, syphilis, dysentery and madness.
