Research Notes on Scientists Decode HIV Genome
A team led by Dr. Kevin Weeks at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced a breakthrough in decoding the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) genome.1 Previously, only twenty percent of the HIV genome was characterized.2 This finding may pave the way for further research in changing the current ribonucleic acid (RNA) strands in the development of new drugs to treat HIV.3
Fast Facts:
- The findings were released in the August 2009 issue of the journal Nature.3
- HIV genome is large and contains two strands of approximately 10,000 nucleotides.3
- Approximately 39.4 million individuals worldwide have been diagnosed with HIV.4
