Research Notes on Schizophrenia Symptoms
In Greek, schizophrenia means split mind. This inaccurately makes people think that means a person with schizophrenia has a split personality disorder. For those who suffer from this chronic mental disorder, it more accurately means a disruption of the usual balance of emotions and thinking. Schizophrenia causes people to withdraw from the people and world around them. Severity of symptoms vary from person to person. Typically, symptoms may include delusions, hallucinations, inappropriate emotions, angry outbursts, paranoia, neglect of hygiene, incoherent speech and in some cases, catatonic behavior.1
Fast Facts:
- Schizophrenia affects about 1 percent of Americans.2
- In some cases symptoms appear suddenly, while in others symptoms appear gradually over several months.1
- Suicidal thoughts and behavior are common.1
