Research Notes on Schizophrenia Catatonic Type


Catatonic schizophrenia is a chronic condition and subtype of schizophrenia.1 Stupor, excitement, posturing, negativism, rigidity, and wavy flexibility are the most common symptoms.2 If left untreated, major life changes may occur including behavioral, health, and financial difficulties. Treatment plans for catatonic schizophrenia are medications, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), psychotherapy, vocational training, and hospitalization. Treatment should be closely monitored by a physician or group of physicians.3

  • Schizophrenia affects approximately one percent of the population; catatonic schizophrenia is more rare due to modern advancement in treatment.3
  • Common risk factors include: genetics, virus and malnutrition while in womb, trauma, stress, and use of psychoactive drugs during adolescence.3
  • The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has specific guidelines for diagnosing catatonic schizophrenia.3
  • Benzodiazepines and barbiturates are the most commonly prescribed medications for symptoms.3
