Scarlet fever, also known as scarletina,1 is caused when infected with a group A streptococcus bacteria.2 Scarlet fever most commonly affects children 5 to 15 years of age, and rarely affects people older than 18.1 Although once considered a serious childhood illness, antibiotic treatments now make it far less threatening.1
