Research Notes on Scalp Psoriasis Treatments

Treatment of scalp psoriasis is approached a little differently than psoriasis that may affect other parts of the body. Hair can make it difficult to apply topical products and can interfere with the scalp benefiting from the effects of ultraviolet light. Scalp psoriasis treatment may include the use of coal tar shampoo, antifungal shampoo, topical steroids, calcipotriol, salicylic acid cream, or dithranol.1

Fast Facts:

  • Cutting the hair short can make treating scalp psoriasis easier.1
  • Systemic treatments are typically only used if scalp psoriasis is moderate to severe or if psoriasis also affects other parts of the body.2
  • In some mild cases, steroid injections may be given by a doctor to treat scalp psoriasis.2
